SNL on Sarah Palin: Too Scary and Too True

By JABG

I haven’t been blogging about Sarah since she herself does such a fine job of providing us with good reasons not to put her a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Sorry Sarah…you may have gumption, commitment to your principles (scary as they are to me), and terrific media appeal, but you don’t know beans about the intricacies of world or even domestic policies. And what scares me most, is you don’t seem to know how much you don’t know.

But SNL’s Tina Fey does such a good job of summing it up, I’ll leave it to her to tell it. Ooops. I’m having trouble getting the video to post, so please just click here:

TINA FEY DOES PALIN BETTER THAN PALIN

I got to get this off my chest.

McCain didn’t look Obama in the eye because he has no shoulder socket.

McCain’s shoulder socket was ripped out when he was tortured.

McCain had his arms hung from the ceiling in vietnam. He had his arms broken with rope tied behind his back repeatedly.

Look at McCain’s arms in injuries from vietnam. They are wooden, the has a hole in his shoulder socket.

McCain’s arms have no flexibility, they are a wooden. McCain can’t lift his arms up to comb his hair.

Hard for McCain to turn to Obama when he has no shoulder socket.

Next debate when McCain can move around I’m sure he will turn towards Obama.

McCain is being savaged. Nothing more unamerican than taking advantage of his war injuries.

I understand that you feel the need to add this perspective. But with all due respect, McCain is totally capable of turning his full body. He needn’t have done that all the time, but sir he can turn. His legs work fine. This was a tactic, not about his physical condition or the unfortunate life-time challenges he faces as a result of his most heroic actions.

There are many fine war veterans who are equally unhappy with his positions and with the way he’s run his campaign to date. He is not being attacked for his proud service. He’s being attacked for his waivering and often half-formed positions and for his half-truths. And many physically challenged people (I know a few who second me on this) would be insulted if he ever used this as an excuse. He never has before and I don’t really believe he would.

So far, no matter what he’s done that he gets chastised for publicly, his staff and/or supporters come up with some explanation or another to help ameliorate the reaction. But it doesn’t change the fact that what he’s done was on purpose. He’s too sharp and seasoned for all these “mistakes”. And in this case, if his campaign uses this excuse to try to make us feel bad for calling him on his actions, I will be very disappointed. The John McCain we’ve all known throughout the years wouldn’t use such an excuse.

It’s not about his war injuries. This was a conscious act that he could have remedied – even if only through voice and tone. No…he was doing something on purpose and I would hate to hear him ever say that it was his shoulder condition or any other sort of handicap that made him unable to at least turn once or twice toward Obama and be gracious. Those of us with physical limitations have learned how to compensate. If you see how vigorous and agile he still is, you know he knows how to handle all this.

But I respect your anger at what I said in my other post on this topic (Why Couldn’t McCain Look Obama in the Eye?) and I respect your right to have and share your own point of view. THAT’S what makes America great. So thank you for adding so passionately to the conversation.

And if McCain has problems looking people in the eye, how will he meet with other foreign leaders? Will one of his “preconditions” be that he not be expected to look anyone in the eye?

  5. JABG Says:

Hi SE! Thanks for adding your voice. Agreed…the skit is just wonderful! Right on target at every point.

Terry B.: Well said. I am pretty sure McCain has found effective ways over the years to compensate for the lasting injuries he received during his horrible time as a POW. The issue here has nothing to do with his physical limitations. Thanks for adding to the conversation.
