Hot off the presses: Despite term limits, this Thursday NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg may actually announce his long-rumored intention to run for a third term.
Although a third term is not permitted at the moment, there are two ways to change this: voters can decide to lift term limits via referendum OR legislation can be passed by the City Council. And now, according to sources other than mine, the City Council may well be ready to say good-bye to term limits, including their own of course.
Here’s the NY Times story:
Bloomberg Called Ready to Announce Third-Term Bid
According to Dominic Carter of NY1, the difference between this possible attempt to overturn term limits and former mayor Giuliani’s own failed attempt, is that Bloomberg is really popular and has a good chance of making it happen with public support. And, he already seems to have the City Council’s support.
What do I think?
I think Mike Bloomberg is a bright, creative, strategic planner and visionary who has been great for New York City (although I’d like to talk to him about SOME of his development policies). And I for one am not opposed to lifting term limits for him or anyone.
If someone is really good, why shouldn’t we have the right to elect them to another term? To me, term limits are an insult to voters who always have the right to “throw da bum out!” just by voting. In this case, he’s certainly no bum and I’d be thrilled to be able to vote for him again.
If this really is true…go Mike! LOVE your terrific environmental policies, your commitment to all of us no matter who we are, and your own deep love for this city. And considering what this city may be about to go through as a result of the labyrinthine financial mess we’re in, I’d rather have your steady and capable hands at the helm than anyone else I can think of.
